Newbury Park, CA. MDK/Wonder Warthog Racing (WWR) had a successful week, putting three riders into the main, including Team Captain Heath Voss, Spanish Sensation Manu Rivas, and new this year to Supercross Mike McDade.
The night started off with a literal bang as Ryan Mills lost the front end in his heat and hit his noggin. He ended up with a slight concussion and was out for the night. MDK/WWR riders Heath Voss (sponsored by the Air Force and Mastercraft) and MDK Speed-equipped Manu Rivas scored respectable finishing positions in their heats to qualify directly to the main in the big bike class. Jiri Dostal scored a 10th in his heat, just a hair away from qualifying.
The Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) in the Lites was an eye opening surprise. Team Serious/MDK/WWR’s Mike McDade, in only his second Supercross, pulled the holeshot and led wire-to-wire. It was an incredible turn of events as Mike didn’t even make the night show in Atlanta. Look for Mike to be running up front in the future, as the kid has mad skills. MB2/WWR/Procircuit/MDK team member Chris Gosselaar pulled the holeshot in the Supercross class but struggled a bit on the big bike. Chris will be back bigger and badder than ever next week for sure.
In the main events, Heath, after a decent start, struggled due to nagging injuries. Heath pushed through it to finish 14th. Manu Rivas fared better; he rode smoothly and eventually finished in 12th place. Expect both to be back in the top 10 soon. McDade finished a stellar 15th in the Lites class. Look for Mike to break through this year.
Of the 9 MDK/WWR riders pitted out of the DeCal Works Hog Haven, 7 made the evening program. Joining Voss, Gosselaar and Rivas, in the Supercross class were Ryan Abrigo and Jiri Dostal. In addition to McDade and Mills, the Lites class were rounded out by Tyson Hadsell and TJ Tiffany.
The Ride Smooth Award, presented by Smooth Industries, went to Mike McDade as the top Lites finisher.
Founder Steven Jewel of Advanced Performance Accessories (APA), said, “The team did just a great job at Indy. And it was a pleasure to see the innovative APA coloring kit/colored hose kits blinging out all the MDK/WWR bikes in the DeCal Works Hog Haven. We wish the riders all the best in Daytona. I know we’ll be putting several riders into the main again.”
